Link a Contact to a Case

Cases often involve more than one person or organization. Each case has one Primary Contact, who is responsible for paying outstanding bills, and any number of Associated Contacts, who can access the case in their client workspace. A single case can have multiple contacts, and a contact can be linked to multiple cases.

When you create a case, the contact you select becomes the Primary Contact. You can change the Primary Contact later, or add more contacts as Associated Contacts.

The contact must already exist in Clasp before it can be linked. If the contact does not appear in search, create the contact first.

Set the Party role when linking a contact to keep the case record clear about who represents which side.

Change the Primary Contact

The Primary Contact is the main contact on a case and is responsible for paying outstanding invoices. Only one contact can hold this role at a time.

  1. Open the case.

  2. In the right-hand properties panel, find the Primary Contact section.

  3. Click the field showing the current contact.

  4. Search for and select the new contact.

The new Primary Contact replaces the previous one. You can undo this change at any time.

Add an Associated Contact

Associated Contacts are additional contacts linked to a case. They can access the case in their client workspace, but they do not handle billing.

  1. Open the case.

  2. In the right-hand properties panel, find the Associated Contacts section.

  3. Click and search for and select the contact.

  4. Optional: Set their Party role (for example, Petitioner, Respondent).

From a contact record

You can also link a contact to a case from the contact record. This adds the contact as an Associated Contact.

  1. Go to Contacts in the sidebar.

  2. Click the contact you want to link.

  3. On the contact record, find the Cases section.

  4. Click Add Case.

  5. Search for and select the case.

Linking a contact to a case does not grant them portal access — that requires sending a portal invite separately.
